Cheers Dave. Yup, the training does indeed seem to be paying dividends. I think it's basically having a pretty strong winter with plenty of miles helped me keep building! Another road race in two weeks so we'll see how that one goes.
Cheers James. I tried to breakaway a few times earlier in the race. One time I think about 5 of us got up the road but we didn't work well enough together and people kept swinging off too early! We needed bigger, more powerful turns to help establish the gap. Eventually only two of us were left. We made a good go of it, but eventually got reeled back in as the wind wasn't helping. Tried again about 10 minutes later, but it was the same story so sat up! So yeah it was a pretty manic sprint at the end. Was third wheel coming into the last lap, one guy peeled off hoping to slot in behind I guess, and then the guy ahead of me attacked. I'm still lacking that 'jump' so couldn't quite grab the wheel immediately so had to wind up the pace instead. Was on his wheel coming into the last 100, but couldn't quite come round unfortunately, but managed to keep the pace high enough to stop anyone coming around me. Gotta keep working on that sprint!
Was back riding the E/1/2/3 tonight. Crazy fast as usual, 28.6mph average at the end, but I felt pretty good once in rhythm. Tried to get in a few breaks, and there were a lot of them, but nothing would stick. I put in a really big effort to bridge to a group of about 8 and was nearly out of it as the peloton split when I was recovering. About 6 of us were nearly half a lap down at one point, but we managed to drag ourselves back up. Was very hard though at around 30mph! Felt good in the last 5 laps, and kept getting onto good wheels up the front, but I kept slipping back with people coming over the top and just finished in the bunch. Still though, brilliant fun and brilliant training! Not many places where you can find that kind of workout!
